Libyan Jird (Meriones libycus) |
Synonyms: Meriones erythrourus, Pallasiomys libycus |
Meriones libycus is found in North Africa, Western and Central Asia (from Mauritania to Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Western China). It inhabits deserts and semi-deserts, e.g., stable sand dunes and wadis; enters cultivated fields. These jirds live alone or in small colonies. They feed on seeds, bulbs, tubers and leaves, and stores large quantities of food in the burrows.
